Greetings from Victoria, Australia
I am trying to research my G-G-grandmother. Her name was Eliza McCartney, the daughtery of Thomas McCartney and Elizabeth Latham. She married Andrew Roney or Rooney in the Cival Registrars Office on Monday, 21 March 1853. Andrew's father's name was John. There was some dispute as to the correct spelling of Andrew's surname.
Eliza and Andrew had three children that were born in Ireland: Martha, who died in Ireland, and John and Elizabeth, who emingrated with Eliza.
To my best knowledge Eliza was born in ireland, circa 1830s. She died in Melbourne, AU, on Tuesday, 16 May 1899. She was a dressmaker. Her daughter, Elizabeth (my G-grandmother), died 10 years earlier on Wednesday, 15 May 1889, at the young age of 29. They are in back to back graves in Melbourne.
Eliza mentioned a sister, Margaret, in her will. Margaret, who was also a dressmaker came to Melbourne, AU, and died in 1910 at age 75 in Fitzroy North Victoria, AU. This would put her birth year circa 1835. The name on the death certificate was spelled Macartney (possibly a clerical error or simply spelling it phonetically).
I really don't have a lot of information about Eliza, I sometimes wonder if she came to Australia as a prisoner but can't prove that.
Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Thank You!
