Carmel's grandparents were Michael McCartney and Alice McCloskey from County Derry, Northern Ireland. Her father's name was George, who died in January 1995. The family emigrated from Gortnaghey, Dungiven, Co. Derry to Camberley, Surrey, England in 1975.
